Slovakia's Prime Minister In Serious Condition Following Assassination Attempt

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was shot Wednesday in Handlova, a town in Slovakia.


(PLGNN) - On Wednesday, Slovakia's populist Prime Minister, Robert Fico, was shot by a gunman in the Slovak town of Handlova. This left Fico in life threatening condition, and however on Friday his deputy prime minister believes Fico will survive (Per Associated Press).

Slovak media says the gunman, who was taking into custody immediately after the assassination attempt, is 71 years old. The suspect's motive remains unclear, however authorities theorize it may be politically motivated. According to Reuters, Slovak news media reported the shooter was a former security guard at a shopping mall, an author of three collections of poetry and a member of the Slovak Society of Writers.

Prime Minister Fico was shot five times, with one bullet going through his stomach and a second hitting a joint. This attack left the Prime Minister in critical condition. Following the shooting, Fico was transported to the hospital via helicopter. He underwent surgery Wednesday evening.

Leaders all over the world condemned this attack, with United States President Joe Biden saying, "We condemn this horrific act of violence. Our embassy is in close touch with the government of Slovakia and ready to assist." Russian President Vladimir Putin called the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Fico "a despicable crime".

Prime Minister Fico is expected to survive, and is undergoing more surgery.
