Former President Donald Trump Found Guilty On All Charges

Former United States President Donald J. Trump has just been found guilty on all charges involving falsifying business records to illegally influence the 2016 election.

(PLGNN) - 45th President of the United States of America Donald J. Trump has just been found guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. This makes Donald Trump the first former United States President to be convicted of a felony. The New York jury unanimously found Trump guilty of falsifying records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election through hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels who said the two had had sexual intercourse.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had had brought these charges against Trump from his $130,000 payment to adult actress Stormy Daniels, which Daniels testified was to buy her silence, and prosecutors argued was to hide it from voters.

The former lawyer of Trump, Michael Cohen, testified that he paid Stormy Daniels and behalf of Trump as well as working out a reimbursement with the Trump organization. Cohen said he submitted monthly $35,000 invoices for expenses totaling $420,000, which included the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, all without a legal retainer agreement in place.

The verdict was revealed after more than nine hours of deliberations. While leaving the courtroom, Trump told reporters,“This was a rigged, disgraceful trial. The real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people. They know what happened, and everyone knows what happened here."

Judge Juan Merchan has set Trump's sentencing to 10 a.m. Eastern Time on July 11th. While awaiting his sentencing, Trump will remain out of prison.

After Trump was convicted, his lawyer, Todd Blanche, asked Merchan for an acquittal of the charges notwithstanding the guilty verdict. Judge Merchan rejected the pro forma request.

Trump will still be able to run for President, as nothing in the United States Constitution prevents a convicted felon of running for office. The Constitution only lists three qualifications for the Presidency, which are being a natural born citizen, be at least 35 years of age, and have lived in the United States for at least 14 years. Convicted criminals have ran for President in the past, such as
In 1920, Eugene V. Debs ran for President from behind bars. In 1992, Lyndon LaRouche also ran for President. As for whether the former President is able to vote, Donald Trump is a Florida resident, which means that Trump's right to vote will depend on whether he is sentenced to a term in prison and if he has finished serving that prison time by the election. Florida's felon voting prohibitions apply to people with out-of-state convictions. One important factor for the upcoming election is whether voters will still vote for Trump after this guilty verdict. According to CNBC Nearly three-fourths of registered independents said that a guilty verdict against Trump would make no difference to their vote. Just 11% of those respondents said that outcome would make them less likely to back Trump in November, while 15% of the group said a guilty verdict would make them more likely to support him. Among Republicans, 25% said they will be more inclined to vote for Trump if he is found guilty in New York, versus 10% who say they will be less likely to do so.

Donald Trump still has three other criminal cases leveled against him, which are unlikely to be finished by the time of the election.
