(PLGNN) - The United Kingdom General Election is coming up soon, and it's up to the Prime Minister when it takes place. The United Kingdom General Election is a national election that takes place every five years, and it is held to elect Members of Parliament to the House of Commons, which is the lower house of Parliament.

The Prime Minister decides when the election takes place, however the latest a Parliament can be dissolved for a general election is on the fifth anniversary of the day it first meant, which for the current Parliament is December 17th, 2024. However, 25 working days are allowed to prepare for the election.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in January that, "My working assumption is we'll have a general election in the second half of this year."

The Prime Minister calls for a General Election by formally asking the King to "dissolve" Parliament before an election, and the poll takes place 25 days later.

The United Kingdom is divided into 650 constituencies, and each one elects a Member of Parliament to represent it in the House of Commons.

According to the United Kingdom's government website, in order to vote you must be registered to vote, be over 18 on the day of the election, be British, Irish, or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, and be a be resident at an address in the UK or Gibraltar, or living abroad and registered as an overseas voter, and not legally be excluded from voting.
