The UNRWA is a United Nations agency that supports the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees, however the organization is alleged to be involved with anti-Israel terror groups such as Hamas.
(PLGNN) - Throughout the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has been at the center of the conflict. The organization provides health care relief, and social services to Palestinian refugees.
Recently, the UNRWA's practices have been called into question, with a data center belonging to the terrorist organization Hamas being located underneath the UNRWA's headquarters. The center included a large room with computer servers and industrial batteries which were used to support Hamas's infrastructure for communications, data processing and intelligence gathering. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also stated that Hamas ran communication cables through the floor of the UNRWA headquarters.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UNRWA posted on X that, "UNRWA did not know what is under its headquarters in Gaza." This was proven to be false, with it later being revealed that UN officials were informed of this, however they chose to disregard the information.
Members of the UNRWA were also alleged to have taken part in the October 7th surprise attack, which saw 1,200 dead and 250 people taken hostage. Israel had presented evidence to the United Nations that 12 people who worked for the UNRWA participated in the October 7th massacre. The UNRWA quickly fired 10 of the 12 members staff members that Israel said had been a part of the attack. The UN said two of the 12 had died.
According to CNN, Israel’s allegations against the other UNRWA employees ranged from being identified in Israel on October 7 to assisting in kidnapping Israelis.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told reporters, “UNRWA has lost legitimacy and can no longer function as a UN body. I have instructed the defense establishment to begin transferring responsibilities related to the delivery of aid, to additional organizations. UNRWA is deeply embedded in terror activity. The world must see the pictures that I have shown here.”
Gallant also said that 1,468 UNRWA workers, which is more than 10% of its Gaza staff, active members of Hamas or Palestinian Jihad, with 185 of those members being active in the military branches of Hamas. Gallant did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
According to UN Watch, a nongovernmental organization that monitors the performance of the United Nations, there were 3,000 teachers in a telegram group that celebrated the October 7th massacre. UN Watch had been warning the United Nations for over a decade about UNRWA teachers who promoted terrorism and antisemitism on social media.
The UNRWA is also using funding to promote antisemitism and extremism in schools, with disturbing videos emerging showing UNRWA students saying they hate Jews, along with one student saying, "Yes, they teach us that the Zionists are our enemy and must fight them". Some students even stated that they want to kill the Jews.
Hamas also hid a Military compound within a UNRWA school, which the IDF took out today in a precision strike. Hamas-run media claimed it was an Israeli "massacre" where at least 27 people were killed. The IDF stated that “The strike eliminated terrorists who had planned to carry out terror attacks and advance imminent terror schemes against our forces,” adding that “many steps were taken before the strike to minimize the risk of harm to uninvolved people”. This included analyzing aerial footage and using precise intelligence.
Former United Nations ambassador and presidential candidate Nikki Haley said on X that, "During my time at the UN, we knew UNRWA was using American taxpayer money to teach hate in schools. It's why we eliminated their funding. Biden gave the money back without demanding a single reform." She also added that, "The UN owes Israel an apology. It's time for the UNRWA to be disbanded for good."
Since the October 7th surprise attack by terrorist group Hamas, over 1,400 Israelis have been killed along with 36,000 Palestinians, with the later toll coming from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry and is unable to be independently verified by PLGNN.
