Elon Musk, the leader of President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been accused of doing a Nazi salute during the inauguration.
(PLGNN) - Businessman and DOGE leader Elon Musk is being accused by online users along with media outlets of doing the Nazi/Hitler salute during celebrations after President Trump was inaugurated.
Musk was speaking at the Capitol One arena in Washington D.C., and said, "Thank you, for making it happen. Thank you." He then put his right hand over his heart before thrusting his arm upwards towards the audience. After the movement, he says, "My heart goes out to you." Musk's full speech can be viewed here.
The media was quick to latch on to the motion, claiming that it was the Nazi salute. Media outlets and social media users alike were frantically posting that Musk had made the salute, which is defined by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), as "raising an outstretched right arm with the palm down". The ADL is an organization dedicated to stopping antisemitism.
Musk refuted claims that the motion was a Nazi salute, saying, "Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is sooo tired". Musk then posted a series of tweets accusing legacy media as being propaganda in response to the salute.
The ADL put out a statement to X, saying, "This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety. It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge. In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead."
Elon Musk responded to this tweet from the ADL, saying "Thanks guys" with a laughing emoji.
United States Representative for New York's 14th congressional district Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC, clearly wasn't happy with the ADL saying this, and tweeted, "Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity. People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now. You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all."
Elon Musk responded to this by quote tweeting AOC making the exact same motion during a speech, with the caption, "Haha this is amazing" with two laughing face emoji.
