Formula 1 McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has just won the Hungarian Grand Prix.
(PLGNN) - Oscar Piastri has just won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Australian driver for McLaren has entered 35 Formula 1 Grand Prix and scored a total of 246 points. On Sunday, Piastri won the Hungarian Grand Prix in a double McLaren podium. Piastri finished first on the podium with his teammate, Lando Norris in second. Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Lewis Hamilton finished third.
Piastri's win was a controversial one, due to a decision made by the McLaren team. When Piastri entered the pit, Norris became the race leader, which caused McLaren asked Norris to give up his position to Piastri with just two laps to go in the race and "reestablish the order".
Following the race, Norris commented on the tough call, saying, “It’s tough, but I know what Oscar’s done for me in the past. I think this is a little bit different but, yeah, at the same time I got told to let him past and I did. It’s always tough when you’re fighting for a win, and a win means so much to me and also to him."
“Yeah, I just had to try put myself in his shoes and understand it that way. Every driver’s selfish and you have to be selfish in this game but, when you’re just thinking of your own benefits, you’re only thinking of the good things. But of course, I put myself in his shoes and I realized I had to do what was right.”
Piastri posted a picture to Instagram of him holding his trophy, and captioned the post, "I dreamt of this day as a little kid back in Australia. A truly unbelievable feeling. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me and thanks to the team for this opportunity and all their hard work. Such a special day."
Norris commented, "Congrats bro!" on the post.
With Sunday's win, Oscar Piastri became the first Formula 1 winner who was born in the 21st century.
This Formula 1 season has seen seven different race winners, with Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, George Russel, and Lewis Hamilton finishing on top of the podium.
Oscar Piastri is currently ranked 5th in the Formula 1 Driver's Championship, with the McLaren team being ranked 2nd in the Constructor's Championship.
