Jo Koy's Disastrous Golden Globes

Comedian Jo Koy is facing online criticism after his comedy routine at the Golden Globes.

(PLGNN) - On January 7th, 2024 the 81st Golden Globes awards show took place, and while the awards itself may have been a success, the host Jo Koy came under fire for some jokes he made during the show.

Jo Koy was the first Asian to ever solo host the prestigious awards show, however fans and celebrities alike considered his comedy routine to be less than desired.

"As you know, we came on after a football double header,” Koy said onstage. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL: On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.” This joke was referencing
Taylor Swift's recent involvement with football player Travis Kelce, and how she's often zoomed in on by the camera while attending his NFL games. Although the joke was harmless and made the audience laugh, Swift didn't appear too pleased at the joke, and her fans took that as a signal to go to Koy's social media to hate.

Fans of Swift, referred to as Swifties, are often criticized online for their obsessive and cult-like nature, and it's shown on Koy's Instagram, where his most recent post after the Golden Globes has over 29,000 comments, with users saying things such as, "Now go stand in the corner and think about what you did," and "we need MORE of Taylor and LESS of you". Some of the comments were also calling Koy a misogynist, and an incel.

Koy told the LA Times, "The whole intention of that joke was to make fun of the NFL. It’s like, the cool thing about the Globes is we don’t need to do cutaways for ratings. What hurts the most is me just supporting Taylor. I support her; I love her work. I got nieces that I bought tickets for. There’s no ill intent in that joke."

Unfortunately for Koy, fans became upset over another one of his jokes where he said, "Oppenheimer and Barbie are competing for cinematic box office achievements. Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies. I watched Barbie. I loved it. I really did love it. I don't want you guys to think that I'm a creep, but it was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll. It's just something about your eyes, Ryan [Gosling]. For the whole show, just close your eyes, Ryan. Everyone just looks into your eyes and... And Margot [Robbie], it's not always about you."

Fans were outraged on social media about his joke about
Barbie, with one saying, "You are the reason Barbie was made". However, after Koy made his joke, the camera panned to Barbie director Greta Gerwig, who smiled at the joke. The jokes regarding Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling also got smiles from both actors, so none of the actors seem too upset over it.

When asked by BBC Radio 4's Today about the controversial Barbie joke, Gerwig responded, "Well, he's not wrong. She's the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts, so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project, of the movie, was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll."

Koy said that he only had 10 days to prepare for the gig, and that some of the jokes were still being written when the show went live. He also stated that, "I’m happy I did it because I did accept that challenge." He also mentioned he wouldn't be opposed to coming back to host again in the future.
