Spider-Man 2 PS5 Game Review

Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the latest addition to the Marvel's video game catalog just recently came out, and according to players, it might be one of the best video games of all time.

(PLGNN) - Spider-Man 2, which released October 20th, 2023, has taken the world by storm. It sold over 2.5 million copies within the first 24 hours, making it the fastest selling PlayStation game ever. The previous record had been held by the first Spider-Man game.

Confusingly, this is the third game in the Insomniac Spider-Man franchise, with Spider-Man and Spider-Man Miles Morales coming before it. It takes place around ten months after the events of Spider-Man Miles Morales. The game follows Peter Parker, who is juggling the responsibilities of being Spider-Man along with making enough money to stay afloat, and Miles Morales, an incredibly talented teenager who has the responsibilities of being Spider-Man on top of school.

Spider-Man 2 Map

The map doubled in size since the previous Spider-Man entry, with new areas such as Queens and Brooklyn. In order to make traversing the map easier, new features have been added such as web wings which allow you to glide through the map, and due to the power of the PS5, web slinging has also increased in speed. This allows  for incredible swings that make you feel as if you really are Spider-Man.

The graphics have been completely enhanced on this game, in order to completely utilize the power of the PS5. The map looks almost photo-realistic, and new areas such as Coney Island are used in extremely fun ways during the main storyline.

Spider-Man 2 Coney Island, as revealed before release by Insomniac Games

The story is about the same length as the first Spider-Man game, with HowLongToBeat saying it's about 17 hours to complete the main story. The main story has added many classic Spider-Man characters, such as Kraven the Hunter, Harry Osborn, and Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard. It has also brought back characters from the last games, such as Martin Li and Scorpion. This combination of old and new characters creates a fun experience while playing through the main story.

A unique aspect of the game is that it contained intense horror elements, and while not being too scary, they definitely added to the ambience. The Venom Symbiote plays a large role in the story, and the way it corrupts the mind of its host and the violence that occurs is definitely terrifying. The game also has side missions fighting an evil cult, that attempts to kill and terrorize innocent civilians. Some locations are also extremely creepy, like abandoned clinics, overgrown mansions, and scary dungeons. It's no wonder this game released in the middle of October!

There are is many bossfights in the story, some against new villains, and some against old. However, there are so many boss battles  in the main story that it starts to get repetitive, especially because the bosses have multiple health bars each time and what you need to do in terms of mechanics switch per fight making it nearly impossible on higher difficulties. More boss fights may be enjoyable to some players, so it's not a big issue.

In previous Spider-Man entries, players were given the option to change the time of day after they complete the story. However, Spider-Man 2 does not have this feature at the moment, so once you complete the story you are stuck swinging around during the day.

Overall, PLGNN rates this game 10/10.
