Elon Musk is offering $1 Billion to Wikipedia- but there's a catch.
(PLGNN) - Elon Musk helped found PayPal, OpenAI, Tesla, and SpaceX, which has allowed him to grow his fortune to over 200 billion dollars. With that much money, Elon Musk tends to spend his billions on some pretty interesting things.
On October 22nd, Elon Musk tweeted on X, "I will give them[Wikipedia] a billion dollars to change their name to Dickipedia," he then added "In the interests of accuracy".
When asked in a thread on why he dislikes Wikipedia, Musk responded, "Wikipedia is inherently hierarchical and therefore subject to the biases of higher ranking editors, independent of their merits. @CommunityNotes requires people with historically different points of view, based on how they have rated and written Notes, to agree in order for Notes to be shown to the public. All code and data is open source, so you can recreate the outcome yourself. Crucially, even I, as the controlling shareholder of the company, cannot change the outcome of a Note. This is an extremely fundamental difference."
Journalist Ed Krassenstein tweeted "@Wikipedia, Do it! You can always change it back after you collect." to which Musk responded "One year minimum. I mean, I'm not a fool lol."
It's unlikely this deal will go through, however based on Musk's tweets he does seem to be serious about this offer.
